Summary

Gains were made through the wood and the village of Longueval by both XIII and XV Corps. Action by the Anzac Corps on the extreme right of their line was inconclusive and II Corps made slight gains towards the northwest of Pozieres.

XIII Corps. From 0600hrs a heavy barrage was laid on Delville Wood. This was lifted just after 0700hrs and 99 Brigade advanced. They gained their objective about 0900hrs and consolidated their position.
XV Corps. Were to the left of XIII Corps. They went well forward in Delville Wood but found the fighting harder in the village. They gained most of Longueval but a German counter attack at 0930hrs caused them to fall back a little.
Anzac Corps attempted to bomb their way into German trenches to the right of their line. They made no gains.
II Corps. On the furthest left of the two Corps front 143 Brigade bombed their way almost to the Ovillers-Courcelette track.
