14th Century Anglo/French war of succession

Campaign Name : 14th Century Anglo/French war of succession

Date(s) : 1337 - 1350

Part of : The Hundred Years war ,

Summary

Various campaigns by Edward III, King of England to attempt to claim French crown after the French King Philip VI died without a direct heir.

The English King had, for some time, been required to pay homage as Duke of Aquitaine, to the French King as the feudal Leige Lord.
Gascony was all that was left of the lands of Aquitaine but it was a rich, wine-producing area and worthy of defence. When the succession became unclear, Edward saw it as a good opportunity to claim rights through his mother to the crown. At the same time, it was also a good excuse to enhance and consolidate his position in southern France.
