Summary

After the fall of Douai Marlborough marched his army towards Vimy. He detached a force under Generals Fagel and Schulenburg to invest Béthune. The position was stubbornly and valiantly defended and Allied success was dearly bought. The garrison surrendered on the 29th August and were allowed to march out to St Omer.
