Summary
Clifton was no more than a large skirmish in which the Duke of Cumberland hoped to delay the Jacobite retreat into Scotland. The reinforced rearguard, some of Charle's best troops, outnumbered their attackers by five to three. The Hanoverians were defeated and the important effect was to halt Cumberland's pursuit of the Prince.
