Summary

The northern half of the Austrian army with the addition of Kollowrat's and Lichtenstein's corps were engaged with Davout's and Lefebvre's corps. Based on reports from Davout on the evening of the 21st Napoleon realised that the force he had fought at Landshut was not the bulk of the Austrian army. He hastily organized for Lannes, Oudinot and Massena to move their corps towards Eggmuhl, the southern end of the Austrian line. Enveloping attacks by Kollowrat and Lichenstein around Davout's left flank had hardly got under way [1300hrs] when the French hit the left flank of the Austrian line. The Austrians began to fall back and by 1700hrs were in full retreat. As darkness fell [about 1900] heavy cavalry engagements were fought the Austrians again coming off worst.
About 2200hrs Napoleon called a halt to the French advance, his troops were exhausted and hungry, this allowed the Austrians to retreat on Ratisbon.
