Engagement/Skirmish Name : Altmark affair
Date(s) : 17 February 1940
The German supply ship Altmark carrying a large number of British merchant seamen taken prisoner by the Graf Spee lay in Jossingfjord. Although it was in Norwegian territorial waters Churchill authorised naval action. The destroyer HMS Cossack entered the fjord and put armed sailors abord the Altmark. The prisoners were released and the vessel sunk.
