Troops of XIV Corps made some small gains, held off counter-attacks, and failed in some attacks. Cost in casualties was heavy. Similarly attacks made in XV Corps sector were mostly unsuccessful due to uncut wire and machine-gun fire. Some gains that were held had to be given up after dark. Actions by III Corps were of the same pattern as XV and XIV Corps. II Corps spent the day successfully repelling German attacks, some of which were supported by flame-throwers.
