Battle Name : Jena

Date(s) : 14 October 1806

Part of : The French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars ,

Outcome : A victory for The French Grande Armee over The Prussian Army

Type of battle : Land

Summary

A hard fought victory for Napoleon over Prince Hohenlohe's Prussians which could have gone either way when Ney launched his attack too early and Lannes was beaten back trying to join him. Further French divisions arrived later in the day and numbers began to tell. The Prussians had held their line throughout the day but had failed to take advantage of their success, and when French reinforcements forced their way through the Prussian centre, the Prince ordered a retreat. Murat's French cavalry caused the retreat to descend into a rout and only darkness saved many of the Prussian soldiers.
Along with the concurrent battle at Auerst├Ądt the Prussian army was effectively beaten.
