Summary
The advance into England by the Jacobites collected very few supporters and was halted at Preston. The Jacobites attempted to fortify and defend the town but two Hanoverian forces, under Generals Carpenter and Wills, were able to link up. Although the Hanoverians, in attacking the fortified position, lost more men than the defenders the Jacobites surrendered. This battle effectively ended the Jacobite rebellion in England.
